When we harbour negative emotions toward others or toward ourselves, or when we intentionally create pain for others, we poison our own physical and spiritual systems. The strongest poison to the human spirit is the inability to forgive self and others.

It disables our emotional resources and forms obstacles to health and well being. Forgiveness is an essential spiritual act that must occur for us to open ourselves fully to the healing power of love. Self-love means caring for ourselves enough to forgive people in our past so that the wounds can no longer damage us.

If you want to walk the path of higher consciousness, then you must take a hard look at your own willingness to forgive. Most of us simply are not very good at it. What we are good at is hanging on to our judgments and hatreds, blaming others for the shortcomings of our own lives.

We tend to have a monumental misperception about our need to forgive. The belief that others should not have treated us the way that they did is, of course, the ultimate absurdity. When we judge someone to have wronged us, we have literally given control of our life to them. The universe is always working just the way it is supposed to, and so is everything in it, even the things that we have deemed to be wrong, improper, cruel, and painful for us and others.

Learning to forgive involves learning to correct the misperceptions that we have created with our own thoughts.

WHAT IS FORGIVENESS?
Forgiveness is about letting go of the past and refusing to be controlled by it. Forgiveness means that you do not hold others responsible for your experiences. If you do not hold yourself accountable for what you experience, you will hold someone else accountable, and if you are not satisfied with what you experience, you will seek to change it by manipulating that person. When you hold someone responsible for what you experience you lose power.

Forgiveness means releasing your critical judgment, putting behind you injurious behaviors that you didn’t like, and returning to loving yourself and others in the same way that you did before an incident happened. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring what has been done or putting a false label on an evil act. It means, rather, that the act no longer remains as a barrier to your health, wellness, abundance, joy, peace of mind, and enlightenment.

To forgive does not mean that you have to bow and scrape to those whom you feel have offended you. Rather, it means to “give for,” to “replace” the ill feeling, to gain a sense of peace and harmony again. To forgive literally means to “give up” that which you should not have held on to in the first place!

WHEN DO WE NEED TO FORGIVE?
If you have a problem, you have something to forgive. Anyone who experiences pain has a need to forgive. Anyone who finds her/himself in unpleasant circumstances has a need to forgive. Anyone who is in debt has a need to forgive. Where there is suffering, unhappiness, lack, confusion, or misery of any sort, there is a need to forgive.

When your good is delayed, that is the time to forgive. Often everything stands still, and there is a deadlock, until you release forgiveness into the situation. Forgiveness can sweep aside all that has delayed you in your endeavor toward good. The forgiving state of mind is a magnetic power for attracting good. No good thing can be withheld from the forgiving state of mind.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE FORGIVE?
True, deep forgiveness releases the baggage of a negative or harmful experience. You lighten up. You do not cling to negative experiences that resulted from decisions you made while you were learning.
When you forgive, you release critical judgment of yourself as well as of others. When you forgive, you open to loving unconditionally. By forgiving painful occurrences, you internalize at a deeper level your understanding of the human predicament, and thus can feel love more fully.

As you forgive you can access your true power. Forgiveness, humbleness, clarity, and love are the dynamics of freedom. Together they are the foundation of authentic power.

Forgiveness provides one of the best preventive medicines available. The law of forgiveness is the surprise law of healing. It is an immutable mental and spiritual law that when there is a health problem, there is a forgiveness problem. You must forgive if you want to be permanently healed. When you bypass forgiveness, you bypass permanent health.

The cleansing generated through forgiveness helps to release us from the spiritual energy links we have unconsciously created between ourselves and the people who have hurt us. Perceiving and acting based on compassion and forgiveness opens our personal gateways to moving into the planes of higher consciousness.

WHAT IF THE SITUATION IS TOO LARGE TO FORGIVE ON OUR OWN?
Occasionally we can find themselves in circumstances where the hurt, pain, or injury is so great that we simply cannot forgive on our own power. When this is the case, it is enough that we pray to be given the grace, the perception, the elevated Light that will allow us to forgive.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE CHOOSE TO NOT FORGIVE?
When we choose not to forgive, it is like agreeing to wear dark, gruesome sunglasses that distort everything, forcing us every day to look at life through those contaminated lenses because we have chosen to keep them. The experience that we do not forgive sticks with us. Lack of forgiveness restricts the flow of life. Without forgiveness, it is not possible to love.

As long as we continue to hold on to and “energize” past feelings of having been embarrassed, injured, or attacked by people we have encountered, we become overly focused in emotional patterns that block the perception of love in our lives. Walking around with hatred, bitterness, and resentment in our hearts because of some unfortunate past circumstance will keep us from experiencing the full happiness and contentment that is our birthright.

HOW DOES FORGIVENESS AFFECT OUR HEALTH?
The energies of resentment, judgment, anger, and grudges are stored in our cells. Holding onto these negative emotions causes mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual problems. Until there is forgiveness, complete health is unattainable. When people continue to think about old traumatic events in their lives, especially about someone who has done something emotionally hurtful to them, they actually send a part of their spirit to that distant person or event in time.

HOW DOES FORGIVENESS AFFECT OUR SPIRITUALITY?
An absence of forgiveness is tantamount to staying imprisoned in an unawakened life. If we have not learned forgiveness, we may master all of the other principles and still remain prisoners. Not to forgive is not to understand how the universe works and how you fit into it.

When we learn to forgive ourselves and others, we grow, spiritually and emotionally, in leaps and bounds. As we loosen the noose of judgment, anger, righteousness, and betrayal, we begin to breathe with a new sense of energy and purpose. No longer tied by the shackles of our wounding, we are able to see the world as friend instead of foe.

We each have a choice about how we view the world. Do we see it as friendly or unfriendly? Do we expect people to be safe or unsafe? Wounded by life, we may find it difficult to forgive ourselves and others. A willingness to forgive real and imagined wrongs is like taking a drink of fresh water. Nothing refreshes and rejuvenates like the self-love of deep forgiveness.

Forgiveness, for both the individual and for humanity, is our highest achievement, because it shows true enlightenment in action. It illustrates that one is in harmony with the very stuff of the universe, that is, with the energy of love. Forgiveness is the ability to give this love away in the most difficult of circumstances. Mark Twain said it so beautifully, when he wrote: “Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.”
